NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety

The course covers the practical issues involved in the management of fire safety in the workplace, and in particular the legal requirements surrounding fire safety and will equip attendees to undertake fire risk assessments in the workplace.

Designed for managers and supervisory staff who need to ensure that their organisation meets its responsibilities under fire safety legislation. Training leading to this qualification will equip holders to carry out fire risk assessments of most low to medium risk workplaces and identify the range of fire protective and preventative measures required. It is therefore also suitable for people moving into fire safety adviser roles.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:

The course lasts for 5 days on site at a CTP centre. There is no requirement to complete the NEBOSH General Certificate in advance, but attendees will find this prior training, highly beneficial. 
All CTP courses follow NEBOSH guidelines on tuition time and students are expected to undertake significant private study.

Successful completion of the course and assessments results in the award of the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety.

Candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report in English and so you should be qualified to at least level 2 in English.

Attendees do not need to complete the NEBOSH  General Certificate (NGC) as a prerequisite to attending this course, although the NGC would be required for anyone seeking a Health & Safety role

The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety covers the management of health and safety and in particular fire safety including legal requirements. It also includes principles of fire and explosion, causes and prevention of fires, fire protection in buildings and ensuring the safety of people in the event of fire.

Guided learning hours for this course are 28 hours of classroom teaching and approximately 20 hours of private study.

  Moral and Financial reasons for managing fire safety

  The role of National Governments and International bodies in developing frameworks for the regulation of fire safety

   

• Principles of Fire and Explosion

  The principals of Combustion, fire growth and fire spread

  The ignition of solids, liquids and gases

  Explosion and explosive combustion

   

• Fuel, oxygen and ignition sources and control measures

  Sources of fuel, oxygen and ignition

  Appropriate control measures to minimise fire and explosion risks

• Fire protection of buildings

  The means of fire protection and prevention

  Means of escape

  The methods and systems available to give early warning of fire

  Classification of fires, extinguishing media and portable fire fighting equipment

  The method of operation and maintenance of fixed installation systems

  Requirements for ensuring access for the fire service is provided and maintained

   

• Safety of people in the event of fire

  Fire emergency plan

  Fire evaculation

  Behaviours of people in the event of a fire

• Fire Safety Risk Assessment

Objectives of fire safety risk assessments

Principles and practice of fire safety risk assessments

Matters to be considered in a risk assessment of substances capable of forming a flammable or explosive atmosphere

The course will cover the required content over the first 4 days, and the final day will provide more exam technique and fire risk assessment methodology so that you are well prepared to complete the assessments. 

Assessment:

This course has a 2 part assessment process which is completed after the course, and this will be followed by a closing interview:

1. An Open Book Exam Unit FSC1 (national set dates per year)– you will be provided with the exam paper online on a set date. You will then have 24 hours to complete and submit the exam paper. This paper is designed to assess knowledge and the ability to put that knowledge into practice. Pass: 45 marks
2. A Practical Fire Risk Assessment Unit FSC2 – developed around fire risk assessment standards, the risk assessment must be completed on your workplace.

This will include prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common fire hazards, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further controls and planning actions and measures.  

The assessment criteria is ‘Produce a fire risk assessment of a workplace which considers a wide range of identified hazards covered in FSC1 and meets best practice standards.

A ‘Pass’ must be achieved in both units to achieve the Certificate in Fire Safety Qualification The qualification grade is based on the result from Unit FSC1
Distinction: 75 marks or higher Credit: 65 - 74 marks Pass: 45 - 64 marks

Closing Interview – In order to deter and detect plagiarism or malpractice, NEBOSH require every Learning Provider to undertake a closing interview following submission of your assessments. Attendees will be required to attend a short video meeting with the course Tutor. You will be required to show ID and answer various questions relating to the open book exam.

The updated duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 places the responsibility on employers and those in control of premises to ensure that they assess fire risks and take steps to minimise those risks and safeguard people in the event of a fire.
