Why take this course?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is the most widely held Health and Safety qualification in the UK; it offers an understanding of health and safety and a basis for further NEBOSH qualifications which are recognised by the relevant professional membership bodies including the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and IEMA. Successful students are eligible for Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

“The course was exceptionally well taught with the instructor having an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the syllabus.  A mixture of Powerpoint, personal experience and group discussions ensured all candidates had the opportunity to get the maximum out of the course.”

Is this the right course for me?

This course is for Managers, supervisors and staff who need a broad understanding of Health and safety issues. Upon completion of the course, you will have learned and demonstrated how to manage workplace risks effectively.

The course lasts for 12 days  and is delivered on site at a CTP centre. All CTP courses follow NEBOSH guidelines on tuition time and students are expected to undertake a minimum of 40 hours private study on top of a minimum of 68 hours taught in class.  The units of study are:

  • Unit NG1: Management of Health & Safety
  • Unit NG2: Risk Assessment

These hours do not include assessment time, ie, sitting written examinations or the practical application unit.

From the offset, I was very impressed with the centre itself and the instructor. The course was demanding and required a lot of application but this was made easy by the standard of instruction, which I would regard as exemplary. The instructor had obviously put an awful lot of work into the course and was passionate about its content. This was infectious and made for a very edifying 3 weeks.

Course Content

The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a report.

The qualification is divided into two units, each of which is assessed separately:

1   Management of Health and Safety (NG1) including:

  1. Why we should manage workplace Health and Safety
  2. How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
  3. Managing risk – understanding people and processes

NG1 is assessed by Open Book Exam on a set date, where candidates will have 24 hours to complete and submit their scenario based exam questions. Candidates will then be required to attend an online 'Closing Interview' to discuss their answers and prove their subject knowledge. This will take place within 2 weeks of the exam.
Details on this new process are attached below and will be provided with your course Joining Instructions.

2    Risk Assessment (GC2) including:

  1. Physical and Psychological health
  2. Musculoskeletal health
  3. Chemical and biological agents
  4. General workplace issues
  5. Work equipment
  6. Fire
  7. Electricity

NG2 is assessed by a practical assessment which must be submitted to CTP to be uploaded to NEBOSH for marking.

Career Opportunities

This qualification is widely recognised and can be used to obtain first-line management Health and Safety roles across a wide range of industry sectors. The course has been mapped to the National Occupational Standards in Health and Safety, which makes the skill set obtained very transferable.
